The thermostat 6 (see fig. 188 ) is located in the case of the water pump under a cover 10 which has an O-shaped sealing ring.

Removal of the thermostat carry out in the following order:

Prevention The thermostat can be removed only on the cold engine.

- accurately open a cover of a broad tank and merge cooling liquid at least to level of installation of the thermostat (about 4 l of cooling liquid);

- disconnect a hose from a cover of the thermostat and uncover;

- take the thermostat from the case and remove the About-shaped ring from a thermostat cover.

Note The faulty thermostat is not subject to repair, therefore in case of malfunction, it is necessary to replace it.

Check of operability of the thermostat carry out as follows:

- suspend the removed thermostat on a piece of a wire and lower it in the vessel filled with cold water with the thermometer (fig. 192) ;

- gradually heat up water. The serviceable thermostat should start to open approximately at 85 ° C. At temperature 105 ° the C thermostat should open completely, and its core should act from the case not less, than on 7 mm;

- in case the thermostat does not meet these requirements, it is necessary to replace it.

At thermostat installation:

- use a new About-shaped ring;

- check a hose clip before again it to establish on a hose;

- fill in cooling liquid in cooling system.
